Fearing that its ability to repel Russian soldiers may be jeopardized, Kyiv has voiced concerns to Western countries over “Ukraine fatigue.”

But despite the rising tensions in the Middle East, the leaders of the G7 have reaffirmed their unshakable support for Kyiv and their willingness to offer both military and economic support.

On Wednesday, November 8, the foreign ministers of the G7 nations—Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Canada, and the United States—as well as delegates from the European Union met in Tokyo for an important summit.

During the talks, the G7 leaders reiterated their opposition to Moscow and accepted that Russia desired a protracted struggle.

They made it clear that they would not let the Middle East problem deflect them from their support for Ukraine, even in the face of the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict.

The leaders of Japan and Ukraine agreed in a joint statement released by the Japanese foreign ministry that strong sanctions against Russia are imperative, and that their support for Ukraine must continue “even in today’s international situation,” a reference to the current events in the Middle East.

The G7’s unanimity in denouncing Russia’s war was sent by Secretary of State Antony Blinken on behalf of the United States, highlighting the bloc’s unity amidst the crisis.

Fearing that its ability to repel Russian soldiers may be jeopardized, Kyiv has voiced concerns to Western countries over “Ukraine fatigue.”

Furthermore, President Joe Biden’s request for an additional $60 billion in assistance for Ukraine has been delayed, which has increased Kyiv’s anxieties.

There is also clear internal strife in Ukraine, as President Volodymyr Zelensky and General Valery Zaluzhny, the head of the armed forces, publicly disagree over how the war is going. Zelensky called for Ukrainians to stand together in the face of hardships after Zaluzhny described the conflict as a “stalemate.”
