Police in Uganda’s Kabale District are looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 23-year-old female police officer by her civilian lover.
According to police, PC Caroline Komuhangi, a member of the Kabale Police Field Force Unit, was killed at her barracks residence on Sunday morning, March 19, 2023.
“It’s alleged that on March 18, 2023 at around 6pm, the deceased signed for the gun and went for night duty. “She reported back from duty around 6:30 a.m. on March 19, and while she was resting, her man friend Denis Arinaitwe came in and the two picked a fight,” Kigezi region police spokesperson Elly Maate told Daily Monitor.
“As Komuhangi tried to flee, her man friend picked up her gun and shot her one bullet in the back and two more in the shoulder, killing her instantly,” Mr Maate said.
On Sunday, police officers in the pair’s neighborhood arrested the civilian man friend and took him under guard to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital (KRRH).
“This was because he was injured while attempting suicide by shooting himself through the nose,” Maate explained.
Mr Maate stated that the cartridges and blood stains on the rifle were recovered, and a murder case was filed at the Kabale police station.
By midday, the deceased’s body had been recovered from the scene and transported to the KRRH mortuary for a postmortem examination.
