Around 18 female jail guards were fired for having affairs with inmates.

According to reports, the sexual relationships occurred at HMP Berwyn in Wrexham, Wales, over the last six years.

Jennifer Gavan, 27, was sentenced to eight months in prison in December after smuggled a phone for her lover Alex Coxon, 25, so she could send photos of herself to him via Snapchat.

During their relationship, which lasted from April to July 2020, she was also caught kissing him.

After accepting £150 to bring in the phone, the officer pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office.

Gunn was also sentenced to a year in prison in 2019 for having an affair with ‘dangerous’ inmate Khuram Razaq, 29.

While he was serving a 12-year sentence for conspiracy to rob, Gunn, a criminology and psychology graduate, made numerous sexual phone calls to him and smuggled in a pair of her knickers for the prisoner.

A search of her bedroom turned up photos of the couple kissing and hugging in his cell.

Emily Watson was sentenced to a year in prison the same year for performing a sex act on prisoner John McGee.

Mold Crown Court in the United Kingdom heard how she spent so much time with him that his staff became suspicious and launched an investigation.

They had been alone in his cell three times, during which she performed a sex act on him twice and had intercourse once.

‘The overwhelming majority of Prison Service staff are hardworking and dedicated, and we will not hesitate to punish those who break the rules,’ said a Prison Service spokesman.

‘In the last 18 months, over 500 members of staff at HMP Berwyn have received corruption prevention training, and our enhanced security is protecting the prison against attempts to smuggle illicit items inside.’
