Shakira is opening up about how “rough” life has been since her divorce from former Barcelona footballer Gerard Piqué.
The three-time Grammy winner and Piqué, 36, announced their split in a joint statement last June.
Shakira realized Piqué was having an affair when her jam disappeared and neither he nor their sons ate the fruit spread.
Piqué has since made his new girlfriend, Clara Chia Marti, public. In January, the couple made their romance Instagram-official with a selfie of them out to lunch.
Following the breakup, Shakira released a song, which became a global hit, breaking several records in the process.
“I’ve had a very rough year since my divorce, and writing this song [‘Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53’] has been so important to me,” she said on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Friday night. “It’s been a healthy outlet for my emotions.”
Shakira, 46, stated that after releasing the song, she realized how many other women could identify with her situation with her ex.
“I really felt like I didn’t have any fans out there,” she went on. “I have a sisterhood of women who have been through the same things I have, who think the same way I think, who feel the same way I feel, who have had to put up with as much crap as I have.”
The singer expressed gratitude that so many women can relate to her experience.
“And I wrote the song for myself, but I also believe it was written for so many other women out there who needed a forum and a voice to represent them in so many ways.”
Shakira and Piqué first met on the set of her song “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” in 2010. They confirmed their romance the following year, posting a photo of themselves on Instagram with the former athlete’s arms wrapped around the singer.
