The international community has taken notice of Azimio la Umoja One Kenya flagbearer Raila Odinga after he suggested the death penalty as a permanent remedy to stop banditry attacks in Northern Kenya.
This is despite the Supreme Court deeming the mandatory death sentence unlawful.
Speaking at a rally in Garba Tula, Isiolo County, Raila suggested that the bandits be put to death after being captured as a long-term fix to the ongoing issue.
The leader of the ODM party underlined how out of control the attacks had become, with numerous Kenyans losing their lives and property.
“Kenyans being murdered by goons without any action taken is no longer acceptable. You will be arrested and put to death if you are one of those who prowl around attacking locals and stealing life.
Raila promised that “we will make sure that Kenyans feel comfortable when they go to sleep without worrying about being attacked by bandits.”
If elected, he vowed to put a stop to intercommunal fighting in the area within 100 days, even if it meant suspending the statute that had previously prohibited the death sentence.
