Over 150 Amani National Congress (ANC) leaders today left the Kenya Kwanza Alliance and joined Raila Odinga’s Azimio La Umoja Movement, dealing a major blow to deputy president William Ruto.

Saina Nechu, the chairman of the 150 North Rift leaders, served as their leader.

Along with more than 30 grassroots members of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), David Koros, a former member of parliament for Eldoret South, joined the Raila Odinga-led group.

At the Azimio Center in Eldoret, the defectors were formally welcomed by Sally Kosgey, the movement’s regional campaign director, Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos, and ODM legislator Kipkorir Menjo.

Kosgey, a former minister and secretary to the cabinet under the Moi dictatorship, claimed that those who defected were influential people who would rally support to secure Odinga’s victory in the elections on August 9.

They made the decision to support the victor, according to Dr. Kosgey, after recognizing Raila Odinga’s early advantage in the presidential campaign.

She expressed assurance that Raila Odinga would lead the country’s future administration after winning the election.
