Anthony Joshua, the British boxer, is currently spending four days alone in a pitch-black room after paying £2,000 for the experience.

Various sportsmen use this sort of retreat as a form of meditation to help them be alone with their thoughts.

‘Myself and [my friend] are about to embrace the darkness and seclusion for four days (different rooms),’ Joshua posted on Instagram before leaving for the retreat.

‘Isolated with nothing to do but rest and cleanse my head in the midst of boundless darkness.’ He will be released on Friday.

The 34-year-old has been nourished through meals brought into the room, but there has been no social interaction or light for the whole week.

NFL star Aaron Rodgers, who went on a similar retreat, spoke about it in March, saying, ‘It was a wonderful reset for me, for my body and my mind,’ of the four-day trip. ‘Perhaps a little longer than I needed. I felt like on the fourth day, I was like, “All right, I’m ready to come out.”
