The Open won’t be held at Donald Trump’s Turnberry golf club in Scotland until the former president sells his resort, according to reports.
Five years after the illustrious competition was last held there, in 2014, the former US President purchased the golf property.
During a visit to the course in early May, Trump stated that “everyone wants to see the Open championship here” and that only a few “minor adjustments” would be needed to get the course ready.
According to the Telegraph, Turnberry is still not in the running to host the tournament, according to the R&A.
After the attack on the Capitol in January 2021, Trump is thought to have been informed that his candidacy would not be taken into consideration for the honor owing to the perceived threat of potential demonstrations at the occasion.
‘We have no intentions to stage any of our championships there in the near future and will not return unless we are sure that the focus will be on the championship, the players, and the course itself,’ the person said, emphasizing that the company’s attitude had not changed.
Another person commented, “Given how it stands right now, I would have to sell up before anything changes.”
The final choice will be disappointing to the former President, who has been eager to highlight his connections to the R&A.
In an interview with GB News, Trump said that, on the recommendation of the business’s former CEO Peter Dawson, he had lately made a significant investment in redeveloping the course.
