Eight months after giving William Ruto the reins of power, the former president Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday explained why he had not yet stepped off from politics.

According to the Retirement Benefits Act, which stipulates that a former Head of State should not maintain a political position in order to enjoy his pension, Kenya Kwanza has been pressuring the former president to step down.

Uhuru, however, declared he would not leave politics during Jubilee’s National Delegates Convention (NDC) speech.

“There was a point when I considered leaving politics. I believed my arrival at NDC would coincide with the passing of the gavel.

Uhuru gave his justification for not entering political oblivion, saying that “but some people have decided that they would engage in intimidation and threats.”

He claims that Ruto’s government’s persistent intimidation tactics, including sending thugs to steal his sheep and then setting fire to his farm near Northlands City, changed his mind about leaving politics.

When they kidnapped goats and set fields on fire, I remained silent, but not any longer. They should not antagonize either the Jubilee Party or myself, Uhuru said.
