Following a “unanimous vote by the city council” on May 16, a street in Oakland will be renamed in honor of the late hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur.

According to information obtained by NBC, the rapper, who originally immigrated to the Bay Area as a child, made his big break in 1991 as a member of the group Digital Underground and credited his time in Marin City as the “location where he got his game.”

The article states that a section of MacArthur Boulevard near Lake Merritt, where Shakur formerly resided, “will keep its existing name, but also receive the additional, honorary name of Tupac Shakur Way.”

Commemorative plaques and markers announcing the change will be paid for by the Tupac Shakur Foundation.

His selection was made to “celebrate art and culture as a catalyst for societal change” and “remind people of his contributions to Oakland.”

in the age of 25, Tupac was wounded during a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas and passed away from his wounds in University Medical Center’s intensive care unit.

According to Britannica, he was shot four times in the chest at a stoplight by a “unknown gunman in a white Cadillac.” He was put into an induced coma and put on life support in an effort to preserve his life.

The homicide case hasn’t been solved in nearly 30 years. Chris Carroll, the officer who held Tupac as he drew his last, natural breath, said in 2021 that he still receives threats from those who think the musician is still alive.

The retired Las Vegas police officer told DailyMailTV that he continues to frequently get messages urging him to “come clean” about the idea that the legendary rapper sneaked away that night via social media and even the Las Vegas Metro Police Department.
