Raila Odinga’s visit to Moyale, Marsabit County, yesterday was met with confusion and commotion.
Some adolescents threw stones at the VIP dais as a result of the violence that broke out between the groups inside the Azimio coalition.
Some supporters of Marsabit Governor Mohamud Ali and those connected to Treasury CS Ukur Yattani fought, forcing police to step in and scatter the throng.
When the opposing parties threw stones at the dais, Yattani and Ali’s security had to form a ring around them to protect them.
Similar conflicts for domination between Azimio la Umoja Isiolo saw one coalition candidate, perhaps harming its chances in the general election on August 9.
On Tuesday, June 21, when Raila Odinga, the presidential candidate for Azimio, visited the county to promote his platform, the disparities between the contenders were on display.
Leaders in the region advised that Raila organize three separate rallies to accommodate all opposing parties due to the conflict.
Francis Atwoli, the secretary-general of the COTU, David Murathe, the vice-chair of the Jubilee party, Junet Mohamed, the MP for Suna East, and James Opiyo, the MP for Ugunja, were all in attendance with Raila.
