Fatuma Mohammed, a representative for women in Migori County, has criticized the Kenya Kwanza government for its intention to enact the housing levy.

She made the observation during a Wednesday debate in Parliament that housing is not currently among Kenyans’ more pressing problems.

“The 1.5 percent housing charge is not of interest to Kenyans; they want food on the table. We don’t need houses; our kids are starving,” Mohammed stated.

“You ought to feel embarrassed about yourself. I don’t need a house from Kenya Kwanza because I already have a golden one waiting for me in heaven.

The woman representative claimed that none of the government’s promises had been kept.

“We recognize your phony promises. Those houses won’t ever come, even if we offer you 100%, Mohammed continued.

She encouraged the government to read Kenyans’ moods and face reality, claiming that they are sick of empty promises.

On Monday, lawmakers changed the necessary housing charge from a three percent to a 1.5 percent payment.

Employees would be expected to contribute 1.5% of their monthly salary to the scheme that aims to give Kenyans access to affordable housing.

William Ruto, the president, is making every effort to pass the legislation.
