Jude Bellingham, an English midfielder, will join Real Madrid for a cost of £115 million (including an upfront payment of £88.5 million and an additional €30.9 million in performance-related add-ons).
Bellingham will sign a six-year contract at the Bernabeu, Dortmund said in a statement posted on Wednesday, June 7. At the time of the announcement, Dortmund’s website crashed.
The club released the following statement in regards to the add-ons: “Such variable transfer fees are dependent upon the achievement of certain sporting successes by Real Madrid and/or sporting successes or performances of the player at Real Madrid during the period of the next six seasons.”
Liverpool and Manchester City in the Premier League were interested in signing Bellingham, who transferred from Championship team Birmingham to Dortmund in 2020, but Real Madrid outbid them all.
Dortmund narrowly lost the championship to rival Bayern Munich on the last day, earning the midfielder the honor of Bundesliga Player of the Year for the previous campaign.
Since making his international debut against the Republic of Ireland at Wembley in November 2020, Bellingham has 24 appearances and one goal for England.
