Dr. Boni Khalwale, a senator for Kakamega County, may have abandoned President William Ruto by promoting Financial Bill 2023, according to a statement he made.
The government-sponsored measure, which has split Kenyans in half, proposes a slew of additional taxes to be levied on Kenyans in the fiscal year 2023/2024.
By paraphrasing the late former British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, who once declared, “It’s not possible to tax people into prosperity,” Khalwale on Friday expressed stark disagreement with the Kenya Kwanza Alliance government.
The outspoken senator went on to say that taxes don’t help the economy of the third-world nation; rather, they slow down progress.
Khalwale quoted Winston Churchill as saying that trying to tax a nation into prosperity is equivalent to asking a man to stand in a bucket and lift himself: it is impossible.
Khalwale is eager to side with Raila Odinga and his supporters who reject the Finance Bill 2023 on the grounds that it will burden Kenyans who are already struggling to afford a good standard of living.
