Prof. Kithure Kindiki, the Interior Cabinet Secretary, perplexed Kenyans when he declined to link retired President Uhuru Kenyatta to the reported revival of the Mungiki sect.

This follows allegations made on Monday by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who claimed that Uhuru was orchestrating the reintroduction of the outlawed group.

“What are you looking for in this country?” What else do you want now that you hold the top position in our country? You are the wealthiest guy in this country; you virtually own the entire country, including us; what else do you want? Hii watoto ya wenyewe unawaambia waende wapigane na polisi wauwawe, hii gani watoto ya watu maskini?” Gachagua was perplexed.

Speaking to the press on the steps of Harambee House, Kindiki, however, refused to accept Gachagua’s accusations that Uhuru was behind Mungiki’s revival.

Nonetheless, he stated, without providing evidence, that there is an emerging of what he termed cultural extremism.

He went on to mention the Central Kenya and Rift Valley regions as sites where these extremist groups are on the rise.

“I cannot comment on whether there is any proof linking the previous president to criminality…”I will respond as follows: anyone involved in encouraging crime, regardless of their social standing, has a date with me and my officers,” Prof. Kindiki added.

The CS issued a severe warning to criminals who exploit culture and tradition as an excuse to do illegal acts.

“When we arrested a suspect (Maina Njenga), we saw them chanting outside the DCI, and you can see the courage and demeanor of these criminals.” I reaffirm that anyone who believes we can return to the days when terror groups hid behind culture and raped, slaughtered, and extorted our people is misguided.”

“All those who recruit unsuspecting youths to join prescribed organizations are enemies of Kenya, and we will come for you and get rid of you for the sake of Kenya.” “I have room for dangerous criminals, as much as I want to decongest prisons,” Kindiki added.
