Erik ten Hag, coach of Manchester United, acknowledged that Harry Maguire is dissatisfied with his current circumstances and that it is up to the player if he decides to leave the team this summer.
Maguire, the team’s captain, started just eight league games after losing his spot during a 4-0 thumping at Brentford in August. After Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof, Maguire is Ten Hag’s third-choice right-sided center-back.
Gareth Southgate, the manager of England, once again called Maguire’s condition “concerning” and said it would be difficult to pick him if he didn’t play regularly for the first team.
Ten Hag stated that the £80 million defender, who has two years left on his deal, will have the decision to stay or leave.
Ten Hag told the Times that “no one would be happy with this situation.” He is struggling. He constantly puts up his utmost effort during training. He is significant to the team as captain because of how well he manages that scenario and how he acts in that capacity. Let’s say I’m glad he’s here and that he performed well when we needed him. But he also needs to make a choice.
David de Gea might occasionally sit on the bench if he continues at Old Trafford, according to Ten Hag.
The Dutchman reaffirmed that both the club and the goalie are eager for him to re-sign but cautioned that he may not receive regular playing time. The goalkeeper’s contract expires in the summer.
Because there must be competition in a team like Man United, the manager remarked, “I won’t say he’ll always be my No. 1.”
