President William Ruto’s effort to remove 3% of workers’ monthly salaries for his housing project has gotten a significant boost.

This follows the Jua Kali sector’s support for the housing fund.

During the Finance Bill 2023 hearings, the informal sector employees issued a statement through Jua Kali Constructors and the Nairobi Market Traders Association.

They also expressed their unhappiness at not being included in the conversation’s early stages.

“We will continue contributing to the housing fund, and together as a sector, we will change the face of housing in Kenya,” the sector stated.

They accused politicians and other Kenyans, led by Azimio Leader Raila Odinga, of misleading Kenyans about the Finance Bill 2023 through their leadership.

“Those opposing the Housing Fund are issuing statements from their homes in Lavington, Kileleshwa, and Karen.”

“We are the Mama Mbogas, and the majority of our people are slum dwellers, and we must be given the opportunity to discuss the housing scheme in the future,” they said.

The Jua Kali sector also indicated that they understand the hardship of inadequate housing, which is why they fully support the President’s Affordable Housing Program.

They did, however, express their concern that the initiative might shortchange them.

“If these houses are for low-income people, let them remain for low-income people,” they pleaded with the President.
