Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga has provided bad news about President William Ruto’s program as the dispute over the proposed housing levy continues.

This comes after he announced that Kenyans who fail to pay for the projected affordable housing units during a 20 to 30-year repayment period will be evicted.

While explaining the housing scheme to journalists at State House yesterday, Hinga also revealed that one will need to pay at least 10% of the house’s value before entering, contrary to popular belief among Kenyans that once you start paying 3% of your monthly salary, you get a house right away.

The PS also highlighted additional hidden expenses that homeowners that qualify for the program will be required to pay that they may be unaware of.

“The allocation criteria are ‘first past the gate,’ you must have raised a 10% deposit for that unit, and you must register at ‘Boma Yangu,'” PS Hinga explained.

“You will be charged a service fee because that is your home.” The discussion is about owners vs renters, and you need to take care of that house,” he added.

Hinga also stated that people who opt out of the Fund after seven years will only receive their contributions, while employers’ contributions on the employees’ accounts at the Fund will be held for a further seven years, contrary to previous reports that when you opt out, you will receive all of your money plus those contributed by your employer.
