After being struck by a UK Police motorcycle that was accompanying the Duchess of Edinburgh, a great-grandmother lost her life.

On May 10, Helen Holland, 81, of Birchanger, Essex, was hit at a crossroads in Earl’s Court, West London, and went into a coma as a result. It’s been two weeks since her death.

Her relatives told the BBC on May 24 that she battled for her life but that “irreparable damage to her brain finally ended the battle today.”

Martin Holland, the late woman’s son, stated that while taking the “safe route of (a) pedestrian crossing,” his mother “suffered multiple broken bones and massive internal injuries” and ultimately passed away.

At the time of the incident, Helen was visiting her older sister in London.

‘The duchess’s heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the injured lady and her family,’ a spokesperson for Buckingham Palace said.

“She appreciates the quick action taken by the emergency services and will monitor developments,” the statement continues.

Members of the Royal Family, VIPs, protected members of the government, visiting royals, heads of state, and other visiting dignitaries are escorted by armed officers from the Special Escort Group of the Metropolitan Police.

For valuable, dangerous, and protected loads—which may include high-risk prisoners—it also offers armed vehicle escorts.
