Srichand Hinduja, the 87-year-old billionaire head of the world-spanning Hinduja Group conglomerate and patriarch of Britain’s wealthiest family, passed away.

Hinduja, whose name began with the letters SP, had dementia. His family reported that he died peacefully on May 17’s morning of a Wednesday.

He served as the chairman of the business group of the same name, which controls publicly traded firms in India with ties to the banking, chemical, software, and commercial vehicle industries.

For the fourth consecutive year, Hinduja and his younger brother Gopichand, 83, topped the Sunday Times Rich List with an estimated net worth of 28.5 billion pounds ($36 billion), which includes multimillion-dollar properties in the heart of London.

Daughters of Hinduja Shanu and Vinoo released a statement saying, “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our father.”

“SP was a visionary giant of commerce and industry, as well as a philanthropist and humanitarian… We will always be grateful for the time we shared with him because of the many people he touched along the way.

According to Hinduja’s daughters, SP will be remembered for his significant labor and philanthropic contributions in promoting India and its culture on a worldwide scale.

Parmanand Deepchand Hinduja created the Hinduja Group in 1914. Prior to his sons Srichand and Gopichand moving their headquarters to Britain in the 1970s, Parmanand Deepchand Hinduja traded in carpets and dried fruit from Iran and employed 200,000 people in more than 30 nations.
