The former prime minister Raila Odinga will lead a large-scale protest in Nairobi on Thursday, and the United States government has warned its nationals to be extremely vigilant.
The US Embassy in Nairobi said in a statement on Wednesday that the nationwide protests may continue to occur every week on Mondays and Thursdays indefinitely.
Thus, it gave the public advice to stay away from protest sites, keep an eye on local media for updates, and avoid crowds.
The advisory stated, in part, to “maintain a low profile, advise friends and family of your safety, be mindful of your surroundings, and check your personal security preparations.”
Also, the citizens are urged to maintain vigilance in areas popular with visitors and foreigners, keep their travel documents current and readily available, and carry adequate identification, including a US passport with a valid Kenyan visa.
They have been advised to prepare evacuation strategies that do not rely on support from the US government.
The protest organizers have asked more people to attend the planned demonstrations on Thursday.
Those who attend the protests have been engaged in conflict with police.
During the Monday protests, at least two people were shot dead in Kibera under unclear circumstances.
A third victim was shot on Juja Road when she was working as a waitress at a hotel.
