Two men were sentenced to prison by a French court for breaking into the home of Paris Saint-Germain star Presnel Kimpembe last year.

The two defendants, both 21 years old, admitted their guilt but insisted they had no idea they were breaking into the home of a France defender who had just won the 2018 World Cup.

They claimed they were only able to make it into one room of the house before attempting to run away as a caretaker approached.

After failing to steal jewelry and clothing, they claimed to the court, they fell from a veranda through which they had entered the property.

They went on to say that “money problems” were the reason behind their actions and that a third man had located the target of the attempted burglary.

Yasmina Belmokhtar, Kimpembe’s attorney, called the act “a violation of privacy” and asked for a symbolic settlement of one euro ($1) in damages.

According to the court, the men can have their original prison sentences of 10 and 8 months each reduced and serve them at home while donning electronic tags.
