Kiraitu Murungi, a former governor of Meru County, has pleaded with Azimio leader Raila Odinga to withdraw his call for widespread protest, arguing that it will not help to lower the price of petrol.

Speaking on Sunday at a church service in Chuka, Tharaka Nithi County, Murungi claimed that the high cost of petrol, which the group led by Raila Odinga has cited as justification for their street rallies, is something beyond the control of the government.

“In Kenya, the price of oil is not set; we import our oil. The Arabs selling the oil are not even aware that there are protests here, no matter how long you demonstrate, whether for months or years, Kiraitu remarked.

Kiraitu called Raila Odinga’s street protests “political shenanigans by political players” and urged him to quit misleading Kenyans into believing they will lower the country’s high cost of living.

“It amounts to lying to both yourself and others. They are simply proud of their political pranks, he remarked.

Among the leaders present at the church ceremony were President William Ruto and his deputy, Rigathi Gachagua.
