Residents of Lomelo in Turkana County have taken to the streets in protest of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) after bandits evicted them from their village during a night siege.

This comes as the KDF is said to have increased operations in the area to flush out bandits.

According to reports, the attack began shortly before midnight on Sunday, forcing residents to flee their homes, with some spending the night outside in the cold and others fleeing to a nearby village for safety.

As the KDF took cover, the attackers opened fire aimlessly before torching the village fence.

Residents who spoke to the media said they awoke to screams and a massive fire that had engulfed the fence.

“When I came out of the house, I saw a massive fire consuming our fence. “Everyone was running for their lives, confused and in the dark, with some taking responsibility for evacuating children, the elderly, and the disabled from houses near the fence to the center of the village,” one of the residents stated.

The Lomelo village administrator, Sylvester Ekidor, confirmed the incident to the media and stated that no residents were injured during the attack.

He did, however, condemn the KDF for failing to come to their aid during the Sunday incident.

He went on to say that the bandits had launched a fifth successful attack on the village despite stern warnings from President William Ruto’s administration.

“Residents of Lomelo, Nadome, Akujatis, and Napeitom villages will not appreciate the existence of a security operation unless it is aimed at forcefully disarming the bandits,” he added.

Security in the North Rift remains a nightmare. 13 days after President Ruto directed the KDF to assist police in bandit-infested areas in order to restore peace.
