The African Union removed former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as its High Representative for Infrastructure Development for Africa on Thursday. Vice President Rigathi Gachagua has explained why.

In a statement, AU head Moussa Faki said NEPAD, also known as the New Partnership for Africa’s Development, will take over the role that Raila was playing.

Speaking on Friday while helping President William Ruto inaugurate the Taifa Gas Plant in Dongo Kundu, Mombasa County, Gachagua claimed Raila had been expelled from the AU for participating in protests, which is against the principles of the continental organization.

“Raila Odinga held a significant position at AU; he was let go because he left to participate in protests. They made the proper decision, according to AU, Gachagua said.

Further denouncing Raila Odinga for threatening to organize a national strike within the next 14 days, the second in command advised him to take his complaints up with the appropriate parties through the appropriate channels.
