The perpetrator of a sophisticated fraud that stole Sh0.9 million from a Mombasa-based microfinance has been apprehended, and Sh600,000 has been restored.

Francis Mairura, the mastermind behind the crime, was chased out of his hiding place in Nyamondo hamlet in Kisii County’s Gucha South.

This came about as a result of the investigators from DCI’s operations support team following the money that was transferred to the suspect’s six Mpesa accounts through a breach in the Sacco’s IT systems.

The high-level fraud that took place on December 31, 2022, was carried out by the 22-year-old suspect, who was bouncing back and forth between two homes at the time—Witeithie estate in Thika town and Gitambaya in Ruiru.

The guy fled to his rural Kisii county home as soon as he discovered he was on our radar.

He had no idea that the detectives were on his tail; at the witching hour this morning, they raided his hamlet home and smoked him out.

Following a thorough search, Sh0.6 million, 3 mobile phones, and an HP laptop that was allegedly utilized in the crime were all recovered.

Currently in police custody, the suspect will be investigated and given criminal charges.
