The election of William Ruto as president-elect is about to be challenged in court by former prime minister Raila Odinga.
Raila disputed Ruto’s victory, alleging the results issued by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chair Wafula Chebukati were invalid, as he admitted to his former spokesman Salim Lone.
Lone claims that Raila called the results a “rape of democracy”
I recently had a lengthy talk with Raila Odinga, who said that the outcome amounted to the rape of democracy. Therefore, he finds it to be wholly unacceptable,” Lone said.
In addition, Raila said that the electoral body’s results lacked credibility as four of the seven commissioners expressed their disagreement with the outcome.
Now, Raila has attempted to win the presidency five times without success.
He was soundly defeated in the 2022 general elections by William Ruto, who received 7,176,141 votes (50.49%), and Raila, who received 6,942,930 votes (48.85%).
The seasoned politician and his running mate, Martha Karua, did not attend the Bomas of Kenya, where the news was made, to get their endorsement.
In response to Chebukati’s announcement, Karua said that it was still ongoing. Kenyans regarded the mysterious message as a warning that the team will file a lawsuit.
