Three Venezuelan nationals were been detained by police at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on suspicion of smuggling questionable Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) materials.

The three work for Smartmatic International B.V, an organization hired to provide maintenance for the Kenya Integrated Election Management System (KIEMS).

The three were detained for transferring sensitive electoral documents alone, according to police spokesman Bruno Shiosho.

They were eventually released, though, after IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati intervened and stated that they had verified the materials were in fact IEBC property.

Chebukati added that the three are Smartmatic International B.V. workers with a responsibility to carry out a legal contract connected to the use of technology during the August elections.
