After 60 Mount Kenya leaders left the Kenya Kwanza Alliance and joined former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s Azimio La Umoja movement, Deputy President William Ruto has suffered a severe political setback in the Mount Kenya region.
Wednesday in Nanyuki, Martha Karua, Raila Odinga’s running mate, welcomed the leaders to Azimio.
The leaders, many of whom were connected to Mwangi Kiunjuri’s The Service Party (TSP), claimed they joined Raila Odinga’s group because they understood the alliance will form the next government in August.
The leaders went on to say that they had parted ways with Kenya Kwanza because Ruto did not see the head of their party as one of the alliance’s guiding principles.
The defections come amid rumors that Mwangi Kiunjuri and the former governor of Kiambu county, William Kabogo, are getting ready to join Azimio soon.
