Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has been welcomed back by a businesswoman from Nyeri County who made headlines in 2007 when she ejected him from her hotel.
Lucy Weru made news in the run-up to the 2007 General Election when she violently removed Raila from her Mathira-based hotel, Karatina Tourist Lodge.
Mwai Kibaki was seeking re-election in the chaotic elections, and he faced heavy competition from the former prime minister.
Weru was a strong supporter of Kibaki’s presidency, and one of her daughters is married to one of the president’s sons.
Raila described the event while campaigning in Nyeri in 2021, but added that he had forgiven her and that they had agreed to enjoy a cup of tea.
“I was kicked out of a hotel in Karatina once, but I forgiven that lady.” We’ve decided that I’ll have a cup of tea with her at her house.
“We want Kenyans to be more united than they have ever been,” he added.
Weru, on the other hand, stated that she holds no personal resentment towards Raila, and that as part of their reconciliation, the lady offered Raila an office space in the city for Azimio activities.
