Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s ODM has chosen late MP William Kamoti’s younger brother as its candidate in the August General Election for the Rabai parliamentary seat.
The Rabai legislator died in a car accident in the Komaza sector of the Kilifi-Mombasa route on Sunday evening.
On Tuesday, Mohamed Mdigo Mwamkale, the former chairperson of the Mariakani town council, was given the ODM ticket.
The candidate has already submitted his candidacy papers for clearance to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
“We’re waiting for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to clear him before we declare him the ODM candidate,” Kilifi ODM Chairperson Teddy Mwambire told local reporters on Tuesday.
Kamoti, a lawyer in his second term as Rabai MP, died just hours after the IEBC authorized him to run for re-election in August.
At Stage ya Maziwa, near Kilifi town, the MP was killed when his automobile crashed head-on with another vehicle.
According to Muslim tradition, he was laid to rest at his home in Mwamruu village on Monday evening.
Raila Odinga, the head of the ODM, was among the high-profile leaders that flocked to the MP’s residence to offer their respects.
