Monkeypox has been confirmed in a guy in the United States.

A monkeypox infection has been discovered in a man in Massachusetts, marking the first occurrence of the rare virus in the US this year.

The patient is an adult male who recently traveled to Canada, according to a notice from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. The CDC validated the department’s initial testing Tuesday.

In a news release, MDPH noted, “The case poses no public concern, and the subject is hospitalized and in good condition.” “The DPH is collaborating with the CDC, appropriate local boards of health, and the patient’s health care providers to identify anyone who may have had contact with the patient while he was infectious.”

It comes as four more instances of monkeypox were recently discovered in the United Kingdom, bringing the total number of cases in the country to nine since May 1.

The resident was brought to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on May 12 and was “recognized as a likely monkeypox suspect over the course of their stay,” according to Dr. Erica Shenoy, associate chief of the hospital’s infection control unit.

Doctors were motivated to “think more broadly about the patient’s diagnosis” after hearing about occurrences of monkeypox in the United Kingdom, according to Shenoy.

Officials at the hospital stated they are currently unaware of any occurrences in Canada and don’t know where the resident caught the ailment.

This comes after five gay or bisexual males in Portugal tested positive with Monkeypox, while Spain is investigating eight possible male cases.

The monkeypox virus causes monkeypox, which is a rare disease. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the first human case was discovered in 1970.
